Marathon

Scott Gittoes: Debut marathon run. Joel Pridmore: Fastest ever marathon.

Dan Begley: Multiple finisher in both Marathon and Ultra Marathon.

Billie McCarthy: Debut marathon.

Canberra - good on debut

  • Small crowds means minimal hassle in race logistics, i.e. collecting your race bibs, getting to the start, finding your corral. It's a no-brainer for anyone who wants an organised, no-fuss, minimal leg work race to post a marathon time and tick their Bucket List.
  • Great course that is AIMS approved (ridgey didge certified correct distance). Though it's not as flat as you might thing (everyone seems to think Canberra is flat) you can be assured of a picturesque course, that take in all the Nation's Capital's and is 100% certified at marathon distance.
  • Road trip. Who doesn't love? Just a 4 hour trip from Sydney you can cruise down in short time, race on Sunday morning and make it back for work Monday. Job done, marathon in the bank!

Canberra - for a Personal Best

  • Small crowds means minimal time you have to waste standing around at the start line, getting cold, busting for a wee, waiting for the start. Canberra has only a few thousand people competing, you can front up 30 minutes before the race and sidle into your preferred area. There's no corral warriors here.
  • This AIMS approved course will be wide open for you to get out and hit you pace early. It's not like City2Surf where you spend 20 minutes ducking and weaving through the crowds.
  • There's always a decent spread of running talent on display in Canberra so you'll be able to find a pack to your liking and tack on for a fast time.

Not quite ready for the full marathon? Why not try the:

Half Marathon

2012: I was lucky enough to get the win in the Half Marathon here.

Canberra - start with a half

  • Because of its timing in mid-April, Canberra is a great place to open your road running account for the year. Start with the Half Marathon here and aim to go longer as the year progresses.
  • Road running - due to its aerobic nature - is considered a Winter sport. Some people don't want to prepare for a Marathon - doing long runs - through Summer and over Christmas. If this is you, then choose the Half in Canberra, enjoy your summer and build a base of fitness for later in the year.
  • If you're a late starter then you're more likely to have a chance in the Half Marathon (compared to its big brother).
